Indian PRL scientists discover an ‘EPIC’ planet

• A team from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, has spotted for the first time a distant planet six times bigger than Earth and revolving around a Sun-like star about 600 light years away.

• With this discovery India has joined a handful of countries which have discovered planets around stars,
• इस खोज के साथ भारत कुछ हद तक देशों में शामिल हो गया है, जिन्होंने तारों के चारों ओर घूमने वाले ग्रहों की खोज की है, 
• The discovery was made using a PRL-designed spectrograph, PARAS, to measure and confirm the mass of the new planet.
• नई ग्रह के द्रव्यमान को मापने और पुष्टि करने के लिए खोज एक पीआरएल द्वारा डिजाइन किए गए स्पेक्ट्रोग्राफ, पैरास का उपयोग करके की गई थी।
• EPIC was found circling very close to the Sun-like star, going around it once in about 19.5 days and unlikely to be inhabitable because of its high surface temperature of around 600°C.
• EPIC सूर्य के समान सितारे के चारों ओर बहुत करीब घूम रहा था, लगभग 19.5 दिनों में एक बार इसके पास जा रहा था और यहाँ 600 डिग्री सेल्सियस के उच्च सतह तापमान के कारण रहने योग्य होने की संभावना नहीं थी।
• The team found the planet to be smaller in size than Saturn and bigger than Neptune.
• टीम ने ग्रह को शनि की तुलना में आकार में छोटा और नेप्च्यून से बड़ा पाया।
• Its mass is about 27 times Earth’s and six times that of Earth at radius.
• इसका द्रव्यमान पृथ्वी से लगभग 27 गुना और पृथ्वी की त्रिज्या का छह गुना है।
• The scientists estimate that over 60% of its mass could be made up of heavy elements like ice, silicates and iron.
• वैज्ञानिकों का अनुमान है कि इसका 60% से अधिक द्रव्यमान बर्फ, सिलिकेट और लौह जैसे भारी तत्वों से बना हो सकता है।
• The spectrograph is the first of its kind in the country which can measure the mass of a planet going around a star.
• स्पेक्ट्रोग्राफ देश में अपनी तरह का पहला ऐसा है जो एक स्टार के चारों ओर जाने वाले ग्रह के द्रव्यमान को माप सकता है।
• Very few such spectrographs exist around the world (mostly in the USA and in the Europe) that can do such precise measurements.
• दुनिया भर में बहुत कम ऐसे स्पेक्ट्रोग्राफ मौजूद हैं (ज्यादातर संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका और यूरोप में) जो इस तरह के सटीक माप कर सकते हैं।
• They measured the mass of the planet using the indigenously designed PARAS(PRL Advance Radial-velocity Abu-sky Search).
• उन्होंने स्वदेशी डिजाइन किए गए PARAS  का उपयोग करके ग्रह के द्रव्यमान को मापा।
• This spectrograph is integrated with the 1.2-metre telescope located at PRL’s Gurushikhar Observatory in Mount Abu, Rajasthan.
• यह स्पेक्ट्रोग्राफ राजस्थान के माउंट आबू में पीआरएल के गुरुशिखार वेधशाला में स्थित 1.2 मीटर दूरबीन के साथ एकीकृत है।
